The original Farmall M was 6 volt whereas the Farmall MD used a 12 volt system (two 6 volt batteries in series to give 12 volts). Compared with the 6 volts for the gasoline/kerosene/distillate engines with from 4.25 to 1 (kerosene) up to 5.9 to 1 (gasoline) compression ratio engines the 12 volts would handle the MD with 6 to 1 compression ratio on gasoline for starting. The Farmall MD was only about 14 to 1 compression ratio on diesel, about as low as one can go for diesel engine. My small IH German built D-214 2 cylinder diesel engine has a 19 to 1 compression ratio.
