Its possible to convert from a 3 to a 4 terminal VR or vice versa. Either will work with only a minor wiring change.
HOWEVER: If the tractor previously used a 4 terminal VR where the extra 4th (L)oad terminal was used to feed hot battery to loads such as Lights and Ignition, you now need to feed those from the Load (NOT battery/starter) side of the Ammeter. If the tractor has the wire already down there that used to wire to an L terminal, you can simply connect it along with the BAT terminal (it also wires to Load side of ammeter anyway) but I prefer to re wire it direct to the ammeter in such cases.
Dont forget to Polarize the Genny prior to start up.
