Probably. What happens is some mechanic peened the end of the shaft over years ago to keep the nut from working off. If you had ground it flush first you may have met with some success but if you have galled the SAE treads you are in trouble. That being said there is no reason you can't cut the shaft and weld on a new end. It's 3/4 inch and any machine shop could cut a keyway. Backing up and reading you post again... If you stopped soon enough you may still be able to save the shaft. Take a cold chisel and split the nut. Having someone hold a heavy hamer on the under side to support it will help. Or you can cut it with a torch if you are clever but I always get slag in the threads and it makes it a bear to clean up.
