I agree mkirsch, any universial tractor fluid that "meets or exceeds" OEM specs will work in a +40 year old tractor as well as most modern equipment. My 504 has had generic fluid in it since 1962 or the first time the fluid was changed. If it doesen't "meet or exceed" OEM standards, then the company will be sued and loose their tail. The same refinery that makes Hy-Tran probably makes Delta Pride.
The purists that harp on Hy-Tran probably use Super Tech in their engines. I use Mobile 1 in all my automobile engines as well as synthetic transmission, differentials and transfer case oils. But when it comes to a 50 year old tractor, I feel that a generic tractor fluid is above what was available when it was engineered and manufactured. I do use branded 15W-40 in the engine, but I buy the brand on sale.
