Those cork floats aren't too reliable when they gas soaked. Your new float should fix that.
We had 2 or 3 Ford Pintos back in 1970's. All of them bought used with low miles. Never had any problems with them. Had to install a new timing belt on one of them, but it was getting a lot of miles on it. I had one that would start fine when cold unless you ran it a mile or two and shutoff the engine it wouldn't start. I knew it was flooded, but it would start. I called our local Ford garage and the parts man said its your float. He said Ford knew about the problem and did nothing. I bought a new float & top carb gasket. That fixed the stalling.
