Some hydraulic motors don't like to have significant back pressure on the exhaust port. A 3/8" return line may cause seal problems, and then again, may not with the Behlin.
Todays's hydraulic hoses are alot more flexible and use a thinner outer rubber wrapping than what was available 30-40 years ago. Moreover, you don't need two wire hose. Single braid is adequate for a PS circuit on an old tractor.
