It dont hurt if lighting and ignition wiring is a little larger then stock and if you only want to buy one roll of wire you can "get by" with 12 Gauge for lights and ignition and charging etc. 14 or even 16 could get you by for some of the lighting but like I said Id use 12 for a little overkill.
I prefer 0 better yet 00 for battery and starter and ground cables.
If I were doing it Id even consider 10 Gauge from BAT on VR or Cutout Relay up to the Ammeter and also 10 from other side of ammeter to the battery often via a wire to the starter switch. Likewise 10 from the Gennys ARM post to the VR or Cutout Relays ARM/GEN terminal. ALTHOUGH AS I MENTIONED 12 GAUGE WILL SUFFICE (if you only have one roll of wire) as typical charging currents and loads would be 20 and less amps. The stock harness may have used 14 or 16 on some lights and ignition wiring but again no harm if slightly larger wire is used.
If you use quality wire terminals and solder them then cover with heat shrink you will get a good job and connection

Sadly though all his efforts seemed to be a waste of time and money as he still couldn''t get the temperamental old thing to run correctly!! If i said that this was a little frustrating for him that would be "conservative" in fact the problem had reduce
