First of all, if you cannot kill engine by turning main jet adj screw in, you have too short a needle or wrong angle to match the main jet. Three turns is just a general setting as every carb is different. If you look at the CASEIH online parts manual you will notice that they list three different main jet sizes, number 44 in parts diagram of carburetor. They show a .046, .045 and a .054. All jets and nozzles and air bleeds are matched up to get you the correct mixtures at varying speeds and loads. Changing one may sometimes change another. Over the years many different stunts have been tryed on these engines to change performance. It can be difficult to determine which jets have been drilled or interchanged sometimes. Many of these carbs were converted from double to single venturi so I cannot tell you which main jet you have but single takes larger jet. At any rate, you should be able to turn screw in to lean it out and even kill engine, if you turn it out several turns,(like more than five)it should not smoke black. Some times, one has to find a good running identical tractor and duplicate it's carb parts.
