If you use an external valve, remember that you can put a filter in the return line. Motor oil is fine and works well, but will entrain air quickly if the reservoir get low and the pump sucks air when the rams are extended. It doesn't bleed out very well. Stuff like Hy-TRAN handles that situation better.
