If you are talking about armature end play, that is controlled by a thrust washer on each end. Total end play should be about 1/32 inch or possibly a little less.
The drive end should have three washers on it. The one on the end has a smaller ID and is the thrust washer. The other two, one thick one and one thin one, are stop washers for the drive. There should be about 1/32 inch gap between them and the drive when assembled. With the wrong drive I could see where there would be about 3/8 inch instead.
