I have the same issue on my F504 diesel. I changed the 12 gpm pump for a 17 gpm. I did not know at the time it requires a different gear to slow the 17 gpm down. I used the 12 gpm gear and it puts out some serious flow. I dare to say in excess of 17 gpm. I also used a filter extension and larger filter, but reused the suction pipe. My local IH dealer wanted + $50 for it. I chose to reuse. Maybe this is why I am getting cavatation (least sounds like it).
I agree, air is present. Will this cause damage long term? Yes it will.
