Far as I know (NOT real sharp on these) the 2 leads to the alternator should ohm out as a CONTINUOUS circuit, its simply a series circuit of all those individual windings around each of the poles, IF ITS AN OPEN CIRCUIT ITS BAD.
My best guess is if you put a voltmeter on those 2 alternator windings when shes running Id expect something like 20 to 30 VAC and if shes putting that out but NOT charging (NO DC output from the rectifier) Id expect the rectifier block (where the 2 alternator inputs are and the DC output) is bad.
My experience has shown its usually that rectifier thats the problem and if the alternator is pumping out 20 to 30 volts AC and is a good continuous (NOT open) loop but shes not charging its the rectifier block ifffffffffff all else is okay that is. That rectifier block should ohm out as the diodes they are, an open circuit in one directiion but a short in the other. I believe??? it needs a good case/frame ground as the DC output is with respect to case/frame ground but not sure
