Jim here from the Hyatt Regency O'Hare, Chicago. (at a conference) If the tractor is off and you connect a wire to the amp gauge from the starter switch, nothing should happen. That is a place that needs a #10 wire. If after hooking it up, the tractor still does not charge, and the lights work, and when they are on the gauge moves to discharge, the generator is not charging. If this is the case, Polarize the generator as follows. Tractor off, Battery connected, wire from starter switch to amp gauge (normal #10 wire that should be there)hooked up. Use a piece of solid copper wire with the ends bare (about a foot long) to jump for one second, between the Bat terminal on the regulator, and the Arm terminal on the regulator. This will spark (it needs to) and put magnetism in the field poles of the gen. If it does not spark, the generator may need to be grounded better, clean the mount shiny and remount. If a nice spark, try it to see if it works now. If not try grounding the regulator frame to the tractor (it may be inadiquately grounded) try it and see if it charges 3/4 throttle or more!. If not, and with it running as above, jump the F terminal to ground at the generator. This makes it charge as much as the generator will charge. If it now shows charge on the meter, either the VR is not grounded, or the VR is not good, Or the wire from the F terminal on the VR to the F terminal on the Gen is bad. Let us know. Jim
