The other replies gave you the practical answer. The technical answer is install an ammeter in the circuit going to the battery and then use a carbon pile load tester to keep the battery voltage low enough so that the voltage regulator will command full output.
The maximum amperage output should match what the regulator is set for. The voltage regulator controls both voltage and maximum amperage. As load is applied to the battery, voltage should remain constant until the maximum amperage is achieved. After that, the amperage should stay constant but the voltage will drop. Anything less than maximum amperage will be controlled but the electrical load and the battery's capacity to accept a charge.
