"when all the packing is new several adjustments will be needed as the material compresses. The graphite is the lubricant but over tightening will ultimately score the shaft which if severe enough will prevent a proper seal. Many folks believe the final "correct" adjustment will allow a couple of drops to pass the packing every month or so.
When I repacked my 34 Eight about 40 years ago, I couldn't locate the split ring packing and just used standard chemical pump packing which is graphited round-section cord available in a variety of diameters. I used a fairly small diameter, perhaps 3/16" or so, and just wound and packed enough to fill the cavity. It has been very satisfatory, I did a tightening perhaps twice in the following days and haven't had to touch it for more than 40,000 miles. Some folks have suggested packing with small diameter teflon cord, but I've heard from others that it's less-compressible and not particularly satisfactory."
