PUTTER, I didn't know the clutch was bad till I took the cover off the top of the TA clutch and the large cover off the TA housing (under the steering box). I could see that the clutch fingers were not depressing far enough to disengage the clutch. But I could turn the TA mechanism with the drive shaft and no gear teeth were missing. The split was done at the clutch housing, which has to be done to access either the TA clutch or the TA. Lots of work but very educational. Good luck.
