There are only two basic mower options for the Cub:
42" single-blade
59" three-blade
The key to running a 59" deck on a Cub is making sure the mower deck has SHARP blades, and the front of the deck is 1/2" to 3/4" lower than the rear when setting on level ground.
If you've got thick grass, mow more often.
If you can't mow more often, you can take partial passes; just because the deck is 59" doesn't mean you have to cut 59".
As long as your Cub is not completely wore out, and has been tuned up properly, it will have enough power to run the mower. Top speed in 2nd is around 3 MPH, about half what a normal lawn mower will go. If you were trying to run a 60" deck at 6 MPH, you'd need more than 9-10 HP, but you're not.
Both the Woods and IH mower decks are fine, way better than anything you can get on those stamped-steel MTD mowers.
