Joe, I don't know what the spring is suppose to press against. There has to be something that closes off a hole in the bore somewhere. Bernard le Mechano said once to put a clean bucket under the MCV, take the flow divider plug and spring out, start the tractor and pull on the remote hydraulic lever and the flow diver valve will be forced out into the bucket. I don't know if this only applies to the newer designed MCVs or the older version like your 574.
