NDS and Janicholson are also correct. Just because I prefer keeping mine 6 volts, doesn't mean that a 12v alternator system is bad.
I like generators, and I like magnetos........but then I also understand them. I also can rebuild them (for the most part). My best starting tractor is my F20 with a mag. 1/4 crank and it fires right up. Just de-converted a 1946 A from 12v distributor system to 6v system and a mag. ok, so that one takes 1/2 a crank, but what the heck!!!!!!
12V has advatages if you are pressed for time, if you are not mechanically inclined, or if you don't like turning wrenches. There is definately more maint on a 6v generator system than a 12v alternator system. And as other have stated, 12v is more forgiving on a number of fronts. You can also run 12v things like sprayer's, radios, etc. that won't work on 6v.
But working on these is where I derive my fun and relaxation. You need to make the decision of why you are doing it.
