A frozen throwout bearing will cause all sorts of racket when you step on the clutch with the motor running, but would not result in "losing all the gears". From your description it sounds like maybe the transmission has gone into two gears at once - not unusual if bottom end of shift lever is worn. Might try pulling the shift lever from the deck plate and looking inside. If the notches in all 3 shifter rails are not lined up and centered in the opening, use a big screwdriver to re-center the rails, then replace the shift lever and see what happens.
