Lynn: Sounds like the timing is not retarded at the hand cranking speed. Ya got a Mag? or dist?
Timing is suppost to be retarted from 20 or 30 degrees BEFORE top center on gas engines to around top center(in general terms) This reduces that kick back a large amount because the momentum will carry past top center. If the plug fires say 30 degrees before top center you can see why if will want to reverse rotation (kick back)? Hope these general term explain what may be wrong. Some times there is a "cross over" in spark plug wires that are frayed\old. DON"T sell it.....FIX it and enjoy it. H
