Compression ratio, engine rpm and octane of fuel determine correct ignition advance. If it is over advanced it will detonate, under advanced lack of power or laboring, 350 used a 22 degree advance, H , gas head, flat over bore aluminum pistons used 30 degrees. Lot of 40 degree distributors around, they were intended for the cast iron original bore H and M. They work fine on most with aluminum flat head. The next thing is , when does it advance. If springs and weights are not in good shape it will over advance at low speeds and you have a ragged running engine. A magneto has a fixed advance, impulse coupling is used to retard spark for starting and once running full advanced, most are 35 degrees. Lot of ragged running engines with magnetos at lower rpm. Run fine full throttle. Not that hard to take a peek inside dist to tell what condition it is in and what advance you have as it is stamped on weight retainer portion of shaft. I'll add, most any fire crater piston with gasoline head is speced out to 22 degree advance. Exception would be like a 400 or 450 which had a 25 degree and IH figured that was close enough.
