I doubt if any one person knows the whole story. At the dealership , we found out one Dec morning in 1984 I believe, it was a notice on the computer that Tenaco was buying IH. Boss came back into shop and told me when I came in to work. It didn't become official until sometime early in 95 as it had to pass the gov't monopoly rulings. When it came time for dealer to sign his new franchise agreement boss was in Florida for the winter months so I actually signed it for him. Case pretty much called the shots but I think they heard a lot of feed back they immediately did some compromising. I remember one thing Case told dealers, we will never build an articulated 4-wheel drive. Well, didn't take long for that to change. When they showed dealers new machines would be red that made a lot of IH dealers happy. Far as the magnum, I attended one of the early service schools at Racine on the Magnum and a lot of the people were from the Case side of the merger as they called it. They kind of went over which side contributed to particular items on the tractor. Not a lot was discussed as to what had been in the works previously. We did get the impression though that the Case designed line of tractors had probably reached the point where they needed major changes to meet the competition so I think they were just as interested in getting the basic tractor design from IH as they were the Combine and rest of the implements. Otheres certainly know a lot more than I do about this as I was a mechanic, not involved in the inner workings of the co. It was really hard to swallow though, still is.
