new idea!!! There are bad starter buttons out there!! I think it has either a short to ground at the big button, or is internally heating from a bad set of contacts. Put the starter in the tractor, with the switch disconnected. TOuch the hot battery cable directly to the starter stud. (with ground attached as normal) If it then gives trouble, starter time it is.
