Farmall C - left rear axle

I have a C with the left rear axle-housing leaking. It has a split in it.
I have a second rear end that I can take the axle housing off for replacement. Question is:How to proceed.
1. do I have to remove the bull gear inside and take the axle out? or
2. can I just jack it up, unbolt the axle housing and slip it off...leaving the axle and gears in place?
