I need some dynamite for my 400. It just will not run nice. I can get it to run OK but never smooth. I always wanted an M because they were smooth, this one is pissing me off. It has a 281 engine in it instead of a 264. I am not a tuner by nature but have always been able to get it done after a while, just not fast.
I went through the ignition system. It is fine new coil, electronic ignition, good advance (thanks to Howard), good cap and rotor, new wires, and new plugs. All plugs are firing. Timing checked with a light.
Carb was rebuilt twice. It runs choppy. No excessive black smoke. Main discharge jet has been modified. I wish I had a new one. I did put a better top on it. The one that was on was wore out and not the correct number.
I Checked the valves clearance. They seemed OK but I checked cold. Spun it over and everything seemed to move like it should.
Checked compression. 148 to 150 psi on all of them.
Cleaned and sealed fuel tank.
New fuel filter.
New gas.
12V neg ground system.
Why wont it run right???
The head has been off. Maybe did an inframe but they sure didn't change the ream main seal. With some of the butchering done to the carb I'm starting to wonder what else has been modified. Maybe they did something to the cam and it's out of time?? 150 psi is a touch high isn't it.

He had over a period of months spent a fair amount of his hard earned cash on replacement parts for the old "trembler" ignition. Sadly though all his efforts seemed to be a waste of time and money as he still couldn''t get the temperamental old thing to run correctly!! If i said that this was a little frustrating for him that would be "conservative" in fact the problem had reduce
