I can't tell from the pictures what/how he has butchered anything. Looks like he sold some parts from it. If you want it whole, buy what is there and then look for the parts to restore it. We all do it everyday.
As to your point, I agree. If we all took Wardner's position then the guy with the most money would be able to do whatever he pleased, up to and including buying great works of art (which this is not) and destroying it on a whim. Something like what they do on TV these days. Gold coins, classic autos, and other irreplaceable pieces of history destroyed for entertainment. That is why ethics and moral conscience are such an important part of society. It tells us that, just because we may own it, we do not have the right to destroy it.
