At the battery box, one of the big battery cables (may be flat braided cable) you should find is attached to the tractors frame/battery box etc and thats the grounded cable. As Jum notes if its still original (generator versus alternator) that cable attaches to the + battery post while the other big battery cable (would lead to starter etc area) attaches to the batterys other - post i.e. its Positive grounded.
Once its connected turn on the light switch and/or Ignition and unless its a Magneto ignition if any lights work at all the ammeter should swing over towards - discharge. If it swings towards + charge, the battery isnt matching the ammeters polarity so the battery may be??? backwards but I cant say for sure because someone may have installed an alternator and didnt swap ammeter leads. If it has an alternator Id connect the battery at - ground, opposite from that described above becasue a reverse wired alternator may smokeeeeeeeeee
