Other than a few internal things, 3 pt, and turbo, there are no real differences in the 9 and 10 66's, weight-wise. The castings are all shared.
I know when my friend was pulling the 9's and 10's only came down into the 9500, and were being beaten by a deere 60 regularly. I'd say it's definitely gutted to get down to 8500.
I think the sheetmetal is even the same from the 7 and up. He could have a DT466 crank in it, maybe even a DT530 crank. The 414, 436, and 466 share a common block, swap the crank for more inches, I think maybe the 1066 we farmed with had a 466 crank in it. The re-man engine we put in the 1566 (DT436) had a 414 block.
The only real thing I could think of to keep him out of the lighter class is to require a working PTO and that all gears function.
