When the engines were first run with the leaded gas the valve train parts became coated with a microscopic layer of the lead particles. Subsequent use of unleaded fuel would not cause harm due to this layer. However, when my engine was overhauled the machinest put in hardened seats on the exhaust valves to compensate for the unleaded fuel. He said that putting the original seats in would not last with unleaded fuel. This made some sense to me.
