Yup. Rubber was more scarce than steel whilst Uncle Sam was consuming both for war production. Between Japan controlling many of the places the raw materials came from, and their ability to sink shipping of what we could get hold of, rubber got scarce enough to even warrant rationing tires. During those years, the shift knobs were steel rather than the customary rubber.
