Jim. The problem with using plasti-gauge on an old bearing is that you can not tell how much of the clearence is caused by crankshaft wear and how much is due to bearing wear. If you do not have access to a Micrometer to check the shaft for OD and roundness then you need a new bearing to use. With a new bearing installed and the plasti-gauge in place torque to specs., and check clearence. Turn the shaft a few degrees, or reposition the plasti-gauge, and repeat the proccess (checking for roundness). You should do this in at least 6 positions to check for roundness. It has been my experience that usually shaft wear occurs on the top and bottom of the shaft when viewed with the piston at top dead center, make sure to check clearences with the plasti-gauge in a position to check the shaft at these points. This involves installing and removing the bearing a lot of times but as far as I know it is the only way to know for sure using plasti-gauge. It is a lot quicker and more accurate to "mike" it if you have the equipment or can get someone to do it for you. Hope this helps Tom R.
