If the ground brush lead is loose or disconnected, the brush will ground through the holder and pivot system (which is not insulated from ground). The metal will weld itself together and become inoperative. I don"t know the length of the new brushes. But you will need a spring either way, and getting a spring should be no issue at a auto electrical repair shop. Replacing the bushings and dressing the armature then undercutting will also perk it up. 00gauge wires to it and ground are also needed. There is also a new style clutch drive pinion that is superior to the old unit. Jim
