I would jack her up and do some carefull listening. Many an M has lost a cog or part of a cog on a bull gear. If it makes the click once every revolution check gear, about 6 times per rev, check bull pinion. Far as getting outer axle bearing out, if it tight on axle like it should be it is very difficult to get out as you cannot get ahold of it unless you break it up . I alway work through pto, pushing axle out of housing with outer bearing by taking off bolt and washer and then using that bolt or longer one and spacer between gears and turn it out.
