sometimes mice can get down the exhaust and build a nest in the exhaust and drop stuff through the valves so it sits on top of the piston and it hits the head. Try turning it backwards and if it spins backwards this may be the problem. Also the valves could be stuck and not letting the pistons go all of the way up. Or the piston rings could be corroded into the grooves and not allowing the piston to go past the taper of the cylinder walls.
