You don't have to use the long bolts. Less chance of bending the clutch plate when used in my opinion. I use long bolts with no head and a small wrench size added to the ends for ease in turning. Also if using stands that bolt to the frame rails to support rear engine when splitting. Long bolts let you put some bolts back in the frame rails to engine back plate after moving apart a couple of inches when splitting. Helps support engine without all weight being on the engine mounting bolts in front on diesel or side gas.. Realy need them on a diesel if supported by stand on frame rails. Darn good idea on a gas.
