There is a new drop in refridgerant call Hot Shot that is a drop in for R-12 but you have to reclaim all the R-12 out, pump it down and add the Hot shot so this will require a certified service tech with the tools to do this job the price difference in the two is worth the change and the cooling effect is the same as R-12. R-134A's cooling effect is not worth a darn in extremly hot weather as you have probablly found out in the new cars. You can not use 134A with the R12 compressor it will have to be changed.That is not the case when using The Hot Shot
