Basically it is because IH and all the rest of the manufacturers learned early on that all of their potential customers were scared to death of low serial numbered machines. The customers figured that if the serial number was low, then that machine had not been on the market very long, and thus was un-tested and prone to failure very quickly. Thus IH used 501 as the beginning serial number for ALL new models.
