I think you are missing a piece. The bottom hose on my 1966 140 has two straight hoses off the block and rad with a complicated cast elbow in between. The elbow has a recess in it that the fan belt goes through. Check the CIH parts diagram for a '66 140, I'm sure they show it. It would be a real pain to try to link block and rad with a 90° hose with that fan belt in the way.
