When the TA is pulled back, power is delivered through a gear reduction, thus the lower speed and more torque. When the TA is forward, the power is delivered with no reduction, i.e. 1:1. The only time the clutch comes into play is when changine state, either pulling the TA back or pushing it forward. As long as the TA stays in one position or the other, there is no wear on the clutch. If I were you, I wouldn't be concerned about how to best extend the life of the TA. It will hold up pretty well under normal use. If you are really particular, I suppose you would want to keep the TA forward as much as possible in order to avoid wearing the gears. You also might want to minimize the number of times that you change state of the TA in order to prolong the TA clutch life. Personally, I wouldn't worry about it.
