Still more 300 questions

I looked at another 300 tonight, a 1955 model. It looks like it's in overall good shape but does have some problems. Most notably the ta is out. But it also raised a number of questions. The rear wheels have 8 spokes. Shouldn't there only be 6 spokes? Are these wheels from a 350? Are the correct rear wheels for for a 300 the same as what's on an H? There are only 2 hydraulic levers but there are 3 coulpling blocks. There is one in back for the 2 point and one on each side just under the hydraulic reservoir. Shouldn't there be three levers? Back to the ta. To engage the ta you move the lever forward, correct? When I got there the lever was already forward and I was given the impression that that was just the way the current owner runs it. He didn't seem to know which direction it should be in. Also, with the tractor in neutral there is clacking/knocking sound coming from the transmission/ta area. I'm thinking this could be associated with the ta. I put my ear close to the engine while it was running and could only hear the lifters clicking so I don't think the knocking sound was coming from a rod. I locked the ta in the rearward position and this did not seem to change the noise much from the transmission area. Also, when I drove the tractor there was a growly/whining noise coming from either the transmission or differential. Is this a result of being low on lube or is it a sign of bigger and more expensive problems? Did IH make a number of different 2 point hitches? The one on this tractor has one cylinder on the left side of the hitch and each arm has a large diameter ball and socket joint, and the arms seem relatively short and stocky compared to other 2 points that I've seen. Does this sound right? Thank you for your answers and your patience in advance from a farmall rookie.
