I agree with Gene, it will still work at EITHER 6 OR 12 VOLTS. An ammeter is a passive pass through current sensing device regardless if a 6 or 12 volt battery provides the necessary electromotive force to cause current flow through it and orher series electrical loads/devices. It does have a certain voltage withstand rating buttttttttt its wayyyyyyyyy higher then 6 or 12 volts anyway. There can be a scale difference in meters like say 20 versus 30 or 40 or 50 amps, but many old tractor ammeters are either 20 or 30 amps as they were designed for generator circuits so most ammeters will still work good enough in 6 or 12 volt generator applications. Nowwwwwwwwww if you convert to a 50 or 60 amp alternator you can peg the scale (of say a 20 amp ammeter) which could be a problem (depends on battery and regulation), but thats due to more current capacity NOTTTTTTT if its 6 or 12 volts !!!!!!!! If therefore a 20 or 30 amp ammeter gets damaged from an alternators over current then you need a 50 or 60 amp ammeter.

Imagine a crude hole made in the hood to accommodate a new taller air cleaner, the fender wells cut away to make way for larger tires, and half of a sliding glass door used to replace the windshield. Top that off with an old set of '36 Ford headlight shells bolted to the hood. Pretty unlikely for a car... but for a tractor, this is pretty normal. It seems that more often than not they a
