the amp output of a converted 6v to 12 v generator will be one half. The power output is the same. If you change your lights to 12 volts same wattage bulbs and your starter actually draws less amps when starting they are going to be in the same ball park at battery recharge.
Cooling needed on the armature is going to be less with 12 volt than with 6 volt output. As there is air flow through the generator to keep the field windings from overheating, I would certainly give this a try if I have a generator in good shape. The brushes should have less maintenance as there is less current through them. The only issue I see at this point is the field winding current.
If you were going to convert to 12 volts and garbage your old generator anyway the only downside is the cost of the regulator and the fiddle time. George
