This is as near a diagram as I can figure with your description. The resistor is what i think you are referring to as a restrictor. The box is a voltage regulator. It could be either grounded positive (as drawing, or Negative with the battery the other way, and the coil wires the opposite. The battery posts are different sizes, I would go with the way it is for ground. Before operating, I would jump between the Bat post and Gen post on the regulator to polarize the generator.
