Well, the original 460 had stepped pistons and apparently some one put in fire crater style pistons in the other. When IH came with the 706 they used the fire crater design for better effeciency and were using that design for replacement in 221 engine and most of their engines if you so desired. One thing though, they used less spark advance with crater style as it changed the rate of combustion. The first 706 tractors used a 25 degree advance distributor which was to be timed at full throttle to 22 degrees advance, but they soon changed to a 22 distributor and had a gasoline engine improvement package that also came with a new distributor. Put several pkgs in 706. I guess I never did put crater type pistons in a 221 until I used Hy Capacity sleeve set after I "retired".
