I assume the old sleeves were the thick wall and they did usually but not always fit a little tighter. If you clean one up really good and see how the old one fits then it may give you some more idea of the difference if any between that and new ones. I have over the years put in several sets of sleeves in the MD- Super M 400 and 450 diesels. They all fit loose, like you say literally fall in place but these would all be the thin wall over bore sleeve..The old ones don't come out easily though as they can get carboned up behind them and really be tough. IH didn't offer a .002 that I ever was aware of for those engines like they do on the 6 cyl like 282. So, we just put them in and I never recall any of them ever cracking. Not saying it can't happen and that a little tighter fit would not be desireable, but like other poster said, a little locker would not hurt, just make sure block is really clean but don't use abrasives to clean it. I'm thinking you could possibly find a rebuilder that could get you a oversize liner but it will really cost you as they may have to make them special.
