The oil that is in the cup will eventually become so laden with dirt that it is no longer liquid, and will not absorb any more dirt. When this happens, intake air cannot flow freely through it, and the engine will begin using way more fuel than it should, and eventually will refuse to even run because it cannot get any air. The oil bath air filter should be cleaned and serviced everytime the engine oil and filter is changed. The beauty of an oil bath is that it costs less to service and refill with fresh oil than what it costs to replace a dry, paper filter.
