Karl - Your idea will work. You'll need to install a resistor in series with the coil primary: Simply cut the wire that runs from the ignition switch to the coil, then reconnect the resulting two wire ends so the coil current passes thru the resistor. Mount the resistor to something metal (NOT the gas tank!) as it gets hot while operating.

For the resistor, ask get a ballast resistor for any 60's or early 70's era Chrysler vehicle.

Unfortunately your battery will not charge with this setup - for that you'll need to install a 12 volt generator or alternator.
