I tried looking for my post that listed all the casting codes on SMTA 60177. It was built on the first or second day of production in Feb 1954. I couldn't find the thread,
Anyway, all the SMTA specific parts were cast after Jan 1, 1954. Half of the other parts were cast prior to that. Some going back to July 1953. The oil reservoir even has a 1952 code of "Y".
If using codes for evidence, they are only interesting if they post-date the presumed date of the tractor's assembly. That means the part has been replaced with a later mfdg part.
I found it interesting that the Electrall gearbox on my F-400 (#520) was cast six months after the tractor was built. I had assumed IH shipped that new model, with the Electrall installed, as a demonstrator. It appears that it was dealer installed after the NorthEast experienced two devastating hurricanes in the summer of 1955 (Carol and Diane). I remember we spent half the summer without lights.
