Well, one way is to push the valve in a tiny bit with a small object and see what comes out. Another way is to remove the rim and tire and tip it over on the floor so it is laying flat. If you are a person of average strength you will be able to easily stand an air filled tire back up, whereas if you have a fluid filled tire it will be extremely difficult to impossible (depending on the size of the tire) to pick it back up without assistance. The first way is less work, but the second way is more fun. I'm sure there are other ways too. Zach
